Which is the Best Table Lamp?
Have trouble reading in your favorite chair? Are your corners always shrouded in shadow? Want to escape the embarrassment of your landlord's recessed lighting scaring you when taking selfies?
Friend, you might need a table lamp.
Luckily, there are millions of options on the market. We couldn't possibly test them all, and we certainly found quite a few poorly made products. But we also found 10 favorites that add a touch of brilliance to a room even when turned off.
Why we love our choices:
1. They're readily available.
If the base of the table lamp is sturdy, it's less likely to be knocked over when you reach for a switch or a drink on the table.
2. They distribute light evenly.
While some lamps do this better than others, a suitable lampshade prevents noticeable "hot spots" (excessive light shining through).
3. They're easy to use.
The lamps we love all come with easily accessible and simple-to-use switches. Furthermore, any lamp that uses a lampshade holder to secure the shade has sufficient flexibility to fit the shade evenly (so the shade won't become loose).
4. They are aesthetically pleasing.
These lamps are uniquely shaped and exquisitely detailed, truly works of art whether lit or not.
1. The Magic Lamp's Allure: Room & Board Rayas
1) Why It's So Exceptional
You're supporting a small ceramics studio. The elegant Room & Board Rayas lamps were designed for the company by KleinReid, a Brooklyn-based ceramics studio. Since its founding in 1993, KleinReid has used its own proprietary porcelain and glaze formulas. Each lamp is hand-painted, and the subtle imperfections we've found (such as slight pigment build-up) actually give the Rayas lamps a bespoke quality.
This lamp has three brightness levels. It features an LED bulb with brightness adjustable from high (equivalent to a 100-watt incandescent bulb) to a dim mode of 280 lumens (similar to a traditional 30-watt bulb). The cotton/polyester blend lampshade diffuses light evenly, and despite its large size (over 60 cm in height), the lamp doesn't appear obtrusive.
2) Flaws, but not fatal ones. This is our most expensive option. Rayas lamps are pricey, but Room & Board is known for its high-quality products and excellent customer service. It should be a legacy for generations to come.
Key Specifications
* Color/Finish: Multi-striped warm, multi-striped cool, ivory or charcoal black (base); ivory (tone)
* Material: Porcelain (base), cotton/polyester (lampshade)
* Switch Type: In-line
* Lamp Holder: E26 (with bulb)
* Dimensions: 27 inches high, 11 inches wide; base diameter: 8 inches
2. Refined yet stylish: Crate & Barrel Clem Light
1) Why it's so exceptional
You could pretend it's an antique find. The Crate & Barrel Clem table lamp features a sleek, deep green metal shade set between a solid walnut head and stand, creating a beautiful textural contrast. Black fabric-wrapped wiring adds a touch of vintage sophistication.
You can choose to install one or two bulbs. With its dual holders, you can install one or two bulbs to create a brighter or dimmer atmosphere. However, the switch cannot adjust the brightness, so if you want dimmer light, simply install a single bulb.
2) Flaws, but not fatal ones:
Heat is transferred through the metal shade. If you're a die-hard incandescent bulb enthusiast, this CLARM lamp isn't ideal, as heat will transfer between the bulb and the metal shade (it will feel very hot to the touch). LED bulbs concentrate heat at the bottom, so the shade gets less hot and is more energy-efficient.
This lamp's light shines only downwards. If you want to illuminate a wall or a large space, this lamp isn't suitable, as the solid metal shade concentrates the light around the base. This lamp is suitable for places where you need reading light.
Key Specifications
* Color/Finish: Green (Base and Hue)
* Material: Steel (Base and Shade), Solid Walnut (Stem and Top)
* Switch Type: In-line
* Socket: E26 (Bulb not included)
* Dimensions: 17.5 inches high, 9 inches wide; Base Diameter: 6.25 inches
3. Indoor Moonlight: IKEA Fado
1) Why It's So Good
The IKEA Fado lamp has been a customer favorite since 2005. With its simple and elegant design, this lamp has been a classic IKEA fixture for decades. Author Caroline Mullen has praised the versatility of this glass shade. A friend of mine even replaced the bulbs in several Fado lamps with smart bulbs, allowing the shade's color to change gradually throughout the day.
Cleaning is simple. Dust can be easily wiped away with a cloth on smooth glass, while the fabric shade requires more effort to clean.
2) Flaws, but not fatal ones
Changing the bulb is a bit like setting a mousetrap. The plastic base has spring clips that hold it to the glass. You need to reach in (through finger holes) to engage or disengage these clips to remove the base to change the bulb. However, depending on your finger strength, the springs might be a little difficult to maneuver when putting the base back in, and the plastic edges around the finger holes can be a bit sharp.
Key Specifications
* Color/Finish: White (base and gloss)
* Material: Glass (lampshade), Plastic (base)
* Switch Type: In-line
* Lamp Holder: E26 (bulb not included)
* Dimensions: 9 inches x 10 inches (height x diameter)
4. Beautifully Designed, Shiny: Pooky Larger Wobster Table Lamp
1) Why it's so good
This lamp we selected is the tallest and most beautifully designed. I don't usually quote directly from company product pages, but Pooky calls this Larger Wobster table lamp "strikingly designed," and I think that's very apt. The "exquisite craftsmanship" also impressed me, especially its base, a modified version of the classic gourd lamp with a gradient effect—a shape reminiscent of lathe-machined wood.
You can choose from a wide variety of lampshades. Lampshade covers are sold separately, but we don't think that's a bad thing. Pooky is known for its playful, brightly colored lampshades. They offer a rich selection of shapes, designs, and materials, allowing you to customize the base and shade to your decor and lighting needs. Many Pooky lampshades are made from fabrics like linen, creating a richly textured, soft glow; or from silk for a warmer light. (We originally wanted to test the silk sand-colored pleated imperial lampshade, but it was sold out. So, we photographed it with a simple cream-colored cardstock lampshade—think of it as a blank canvas and let your imagination run wild.)
The lightweight base can cause it to wobble. Wobster's base is made of lacquered wood (a polished solid wood version is also available). At 25 inches tall, it doesn't feel as stable as other tall table lamps we've tested, especially the Herman Miller lamp (whose base is heavier and therefore less prone to tipping). However, the Wobster's tilt isn't significant, and it doesn't wobble easily when switched on or off; you still need to push it to tip it over. A smaller version, at 19 inches tall, is also available.
Key Specifications
* Colors/Finishes: Burnt Orange, Natural, Burgundy, Dark Brown (base color), multiple shades available (sold separately)
* Material: Lacquered wood (all bases are lacquered wood except for the original wood base), multiple lampshades available (lampshades sold separately)
* Switch Type: Socket
* Lamp Holder: E26 (bulb not included)
* Dimensions: 25 x 6 inches (H x W); a smaller Wobster lamp is also available.
5. Beyond the Clouds: Herman Miller Nelson Pear Blossom Table Lamp
1) Why it's so exceptional
This lamp employs a unique design process. The lampshade of the Nelson pear-shaped lotus table lamp was designed by the highly regarded mid-20th-century designer George Nelson. The shade is constructed of steel and coated with a translucent polymer plastic. This technique was inspired by a military technology used to protect ships, but he was attempting to mimic the soft, even light emitted by an expensive silk lamp he saw in Sweden.
The base ensures its stability. While it appears lightweight, the lamp is remarkably sturdy thanks to its surprisingly heavy base. (The entire lamp weighs 10 pounds, with most of the weight concentrated in the round base.)
Other shapes are also available. If you don't like the curves of the pear shape, the lamp is also available in round and oval shapes. An enlarged version of the oval lamp—the Nelson Cigar Lotus Floor Lamp—is a recommended choice in our floor lamp guide. In fact, there's a whole range of bubble lamps in different shapes, sizes, and styles.
2) Flaws, but not fatal flaws
This is another pricey lamp. However, like Rayas lamps, Nelson lamps are heirlooms.
You'll need to dust them regularly. A friend of mine has two of these pendant lamps, and dust easily accumulates on the top due to the slightly rough surface of the shade. Regular dusting will prevent this with any Nelson lamp model. But deep cleaning is a bit tricky: you can only use mild soapy water and a soft, clean white cloth, and you must dry the surface immediately (otherwise it may damage or discolor the polymer).
Key Specifications
* Color/Finish: Metallic or Walnut (base), White (finish)
* Material: Steel or Wood Veneer Steel (base), Translucent Plastic Polymer (shade)
* Switch Type: Zipper
* Base Type: E26 (bulb not included)
* Dimensions: 26.5 inches high, 13 inches wide; Base Diameter: 9 inches
6. The Expansive Beauty of Blue: Miz Enya
1) Why It's So Exceptional
The versatility of this lamp is surprising. The Mitzi Enya table lamp, with its deep blue ceramic base and natural jute shade, might initially seem only suitable for a beachfront villa. However, the longer we spend with it, the more we discover its versatility, seamlessly blending into a variety of décor styles—from an artist's cottage to a bohemian studio apartment. (Jute has a subtle grassy scent, which I personally love, but some may not. This is a common issue with jute, and the scent will likely fade over time.)
The upward-shielding light is diffused. The top of the circular shade, also made of jute, is secured by a brass ring topped with a matching finial. This prevents glare when standing directly above the lamp while also controlling the intensity of the upward beam. Therefore, this lamp is best suited for rooms creating a soothing atmosphere.
It does take up some space (which is a good thing). The Enya table lamp base is 9 inches in diameter at its widest point, so it doesn't appear small even on a large surface. This width also provides good stability, making this table lamp ideal for high-traffic surfaces such as entryway tables.
2) Minor Flaws, but Not Fatal
Cats might chew on the awning. The jute material on the Enya awning looks and feels like sisal, a common material for cat scratching posts, and we were concerned that cats might try to scratch it. While we didn't encounter this during our office testing, I know my cat would definitely love it.
The bulb is very conspicuous. The fibers on the lampshade are wrapped around the frame, not woven, meaning there are tiny gaps between each fiber. Therefore, the bulb is more noticeable and better suited for areas that require soft, warm ambient lighting.
Key Specifications
* Colors/Finishes: Blue (base), Brown and Brass (finishes)
* Materials: Ceramic (base), Jute and Brass (lampshade)
* Switch Type: In-line
* Socket: E26 (bulb not included)
* Dimensions: 18.25 inches high, 17 inches wide; Base diameter: 5.25 inches
7. Modern Mushroom: West Elm Cleo Table Lamp
1) Why It's So Good
It emits a soft glow. The West Elm Cleo Table lamp is shaped like a mushroom (but not overly realistic), with a soft, milky white light emanating from the base rather than from under the lampshade. The lamp features a chrome-plated base paired with a green or taupe metallic lampshade, creating a playful yet sophisticated look. Unlike the Clem lampshade, the Cleo lampshade is opaque with an opening at the top that allows light to shine upwards.
As a glass lamp, it is remarkably sturdy. We were initially worried that this light would be fragile. However, the metal shade and base fit together perfectly, firmly supporting the glass pole. Despite frequently moving it, the Cleo light has been running reliably for several months in our test environment without any issues.
2) Minor Flaws, Not Fatal
This light is best used with dedicated bulbs. The Cleo's E26 socket is compatible with standard bulbs, but to achieve the full pole illumination effect, you'll need a T9 tubular bulb, preferably a low-lumen one to avoid excessive glare. T9 bulbs are available in various heights; we initially used 11-inch clear glass bulbs, but the contact wire (the part connecting the filament) cast a faint shadow on the pole. We later switched to frosted bulbs, which solved the problem.
Key Specifications
* Color/Finish: Green or taupe (tone)
* Material: Glass (steel), Metal (base and lampshade)
* Switch Type: In-line
* Lamp Holder: E26 (T9 tubular bulb recommended; bulb not included)
* Dimensions: 15 inches × 13.6 inches (H × W); Base Diameter: 4 inches
8. The Holy Grail of Paper Lamps: Akari 1AS by Isamu Noguchi
1) Why it’s outstanding
It is a work of art. Artist and designer Isamu Noguchi created the first Akari lamp in 1951 using traditional Japanese lantern-making techniques, crafting them from bamboo ribs and *washi* paper made from mulberry bark. Today, all Akari lamps are still made using this same process, resulting in a wide variety of exquisite, sculptural forms. We particularly love the 1A series—featuring slender legs and a 17-inch height—and we specifically tested the Akari 1AS.
The light output changes depending on the lamp's orientation. In addition to the horizontal rectangular pattern found on the 1AS, the 1A series offers oval and hourglass shapes in various styles (such as the 1AT, 1AY, and 1AR). Both designs allow for analog dimming: simply rotate the lamp so that the larger block of color faces the wall to brighten the light.
2) Flaws, but not deal-breakers
Handle with care. We initially considered the small Akari lamps for our bedside lamp guide, but they are so lightweight that they easily wobble or slide if you turn the socket switch with too much force. We were also concerned that the paper shade might get damaged while fumbling to turn the light on in the dark. I’ve been using the 1AS as a table lamp in my office for the past year, and the shade remains perfectly intact.
Assembly is a bit of a hassle. It took me several tries to align the three slender legs of the 1AS and screw them into the socket; having a second pair of hands would have helped. That said, now that I’m used to it, assembly is much easier. Key Specifications
* Colors/Patterns: Black/White, Red/White, Orange/White, Yellow/White, Green/White, and All-White (options may vary at the time of publication); three pattern options (patterns vary by color)
* Materials: Washi paper, bamboo strips (shade), metal (stand)
* Switch Type: Socket switch
* Socket: E26 (bulb not included)
* Dimensions: 17" H x 10" W; base diameter: 8"
9. A unique take on Normcore: Signature Design by Ashley Wardmont Table Lamp
1) Why it stands out
This table lamp is safe yet far from boring. We wanted a lamp with a neutral style that was still eye-catching enough not to fade into the background. The Signature Design by Ashley Wardmont lamp—featuring a substantial 5-pound vase-style base, a rough hexagonal texture, and a white-wash finish—ticks all the right boxes.
It’s affordable. Many of the lamps we recommend come with a hefty price tag. However, with its heavy ceramic base, fabric shade, and chic bronze-tone neck, this lamp proves you don't have to spend a fortune to get something beautiful and high-quality.
Assembly is a breeze. Several lamps we tested arrived with the socket detached from the base to ensure secure packaging; installing it required gently pulling the cord from the bottom and tightening the fixture. While some sub-$200 lamps failed to tighten properly due to loose internal parts, this one secured firmly on the first try.
2) Flaws, but not deal-breakers
The whitewash finish clearly reveals its mass-produced origins—at least if you look closely at the base. However, unless you stare at it for too long, the overly perfect "distressed" details are easy to overlook. Key Specifications
* Color/Finish: White wash over black base, white (shade)
* Material: Ceramic (base), polyester (shade)
* Switch Type: Socket switch
* Socket: E26 (bulb not included)
* Dimensions: 17.5 x 11 inches (H x W); base diameter: 7.63 inches
10. A High-Impact Light: CB2 Snake Bronze Table Lamp
1) Why It’s Great
This lamp is visually stunning. I fell in love at first sight with the CB2 Snake Bronze Table Lamp’s looped base and slender bronze body. Designed for CB2 by Brett Beldock, it draws inspiration from vintage garden hose nozzles. (We are huge fans of Beldock’s work; another of her designs, the Pavo, also made it into our floor lamp guide.)
It creates a sense of height. Standing over two feet tall, this lamp is perfect for spaces that need a vertical visual element. Although it looks slender, the heavy, coiled base ensures it isn't easily knocked over.
2) Flaws, but Not Deal-Breakers
The shade is too stark white. When the lamp is off, the shade looks overly bright compared to the dark bronze base. It looks much better when turned on with a warm-toned bulb. If the contrast bothers you when the light is off, the shade is also very easy to replace.
Key Specifications
* Color/Finish: Bronze/black (base), white (shade)
* Material: Steel and resin with antique brass finish (base), linen (shade)
* Switch Type: Inline switch
* Socket: E26 (bulb not included)
* Dimensions: 27 x 10 inches (H x W; base diameter: 7 inches)
* Other Styles/Sizes: None
How We Select and Test
No matter what topic we’re researching in stores, we always keep an eye out for lighting. I lost count of the time I spent in showrooms chatting with salespeople about best-sellers while jiggling lampshades (to see how easily they’d go askew) and fiddling with switches.
But once we decided to focus our testing on table lamps, here is how we went about it:
1) We looked for widely available lamps, focusing on 28 major national brands and retailers. We considered a variety of shapes, styles, and materials to suit different aesthetic tastes, prioritizing models with reliable stock availability.
2) We wanted all our recommended lamps to feature E26 sockets, which accommodate E26 bulbs. (The “E” stands for “Edison,” and the “26” refers to the bulb base diameter in millimeters.) Many bulb shapes use the E26 base, including the common household A19 bulb. An E26 socket also allows you to use smart bulbs with any of our recommended lamps. (Sockets that fit E26 bulbs are often simply called E26 sockets.) When buying a new lamp, always check the maximum wattage rating before purchasing a bulb.
We narrowed our list to 25 models—covering a range of shapes, sizes, and designs—that had received positive reviews.
3) After discussing aesthetics, we selected 14 lamps for hands-on testing. Guided by lighting experts, we closely examined details such as the uniformity of light diffusion and whether the shade cast any distracting or uneven shadows. We also checked for structural flaws, such as loose stems or bases. Ultimately, we selected the 10 lamps we liked best.
How to Buy a Table Lamp
For this guide, I spoke with Daniel Gottlieb and Penny Herscovitch, associate professors at ArtCenter College of Design who co-teach a course on lighting and lamp design. They suggested keeping the following points in mind when shopping for a lamp:
1) Watch out for glare. If light doesn't pass evenly through the shade (regardless of the material), it can create hotspots, resulting in uneven brightness across different areas. You might not notice it, but your eyes are constantly adjusting; this can cause eye strain or even headaches for some people, especially when reading fine print. Herskovich suggests taking a photo of the lamp while it is lit before purchasing, as uneven light distribution often shows up more clearly on a screen.
2) If you want to set a specific mood, consider the height of the fixture in addition to its rated lumen output. Generally, the lower the light is positioned relative to the floor, the more intimate the lighting effect. "It’s like the sun rising or setting," says Herskovich. "Conversely, the higher the light is placed within a space, the more open that space feels."
3) Check the height of the bulb relative to the lampshade. If you are buying a table lamp with an open-top shade, the top of the bulb should not be visible from across the room. When shopping in a store, it is best to place the lamp on a surface at a similar height to where you plan to use it, then step back a few paces to ensure the top of the bulb isn't visible. You might also consider using a bulb with a closed top.
4) A light fixture is more than just a source of illumination. Even if you simply want to brighten a dim corner, the fixture is essentially a sculptural piece within the space. You want it to look just as pleasing to the eye when it is turned off as when it is turned on.
