What Rules Should You Follow when Choosing A Table Lamp for Your Office?
So, did I manage to find the right table lamp for my office by following these rules? Well, let me tell you a little bit about my lamp-hunting journey.
You see, a few weeks after I posted about my DIY Sharpie wall in the office, I realized the lamp I’d placed there was completely the wrong size!
Let me explain:
1) I always felt something was "off" about the lamp, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it;
2) I had "borrowed" it from the bedroom because I desperately needed a light for the office.
It was never meant to stay there long-term. Excuses aside, I think this lamp serves as a perfect example of what *not* to do when choosing lighting.
Here’s why:
Mistake #1: The biggest blunder—and the reason the lamp always felt "weird"—was that massive lampshade. It took up nearly half the lamp's total height! Plus, it was about three times the width of the base.
Mistake #2: I know the desk in the photo looks lovely, but in reality, once I put my huge desktop computer on it, things felt incredibly cramped. The lamp was simply too big; it wasn't practical for the space at all.
Mistake #3: I know I mentioned earlier that this was just a temporary fix, but to clarify the issue, I need to point out the stylistic clash. First, the wall design was already busy, and the lines on the lampshade made it look almost dizzying. Second, the style of the lamp base was a bit too traditional and didn't quite match the room's vibe.
So, when I was at Target looking for a replacement, I picked up this cute little lamp. I was actually a bit nervous at the time because I hadn't written this article yet—or learned all these useful tips! When I got home and placed it on the desk, I suddenly realized...
Remember how I mentioned that scale is a crucial factor? This is why.
While the style was decent (though it featured a lot of gold and light wood tones), the lamp was just too slender for the space. I realized immediately that I needed something with more visual weight. To see if a different size might work better, I borrowed a lamp from my daughter’s room.
It was clearly too short. I felt a bit like Goldilocks figuring out the right size... which led to this blog post. (Isn't it beautiful?!)
Now, you might be wondering: since I’m putting it on a desk, why didn't I just buy a standard table lamp? The answer is simple: I didn't want to. A table lamp would have worked, sure, but I really wanted a floor lamp, so that’s what I went looking for.
So, applying what I’d learned about lighting, I gave it another shot—and found this beauty!
It is absolutely perfect.
The new lamp has just the right amount of heft; it anchors the space without being so bulky that I’m constantly bumping into it. The height is spot-on, and the style fits the room’s overall aesthetic perfectly. Its color complements the surrounding decor, while the lamp’s silhouette—blending graceful curves with sharp angles—creates a striking contrast against the straight lines of the wall and the diagonal lines on the desk doors.
Remember how I mentioned that style might be the most important factor? This table lamp is the perfect example. Even though the shade is a bit tall for the base, it works beautifully with the overall style and looks balanced. I think the fact that the shade is relatively narrow helps, too.
Here’s how the new lamp looks on my desk. Since the shade isn't huge, I still have a few inches of clearance—hopefully, I won't keep knocking into it.
Who would have thought someone would write so much about a simple table lamp? But I did! I hope you find some useful takeaways here to help with your own decorating.
Now, I’m off to sit by my beautiful new lamp, bask in its warm glow, and write a new post. Er... never mind...
